Crossword Genius

Hare from southern Madras? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

scurry

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hare' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with motion as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'southern madras?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'southern' could be 's' (abbreviation) and 's' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'curry' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'from' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for scurry that I've seen before include "short horse race" , "Scuttle" , "Bustle" , "Scamper" , "Move quickly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
