Have the money for investing in new fad (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

afford

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'have the money for' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'investing in new fad' is the wordplay.
'investing' becomes 'for' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'new' indicates an anagram.
'fad' anagrammed gives 'afd'.
'for' inserted inside 'afd' is 'AFFORD'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for afford that I've seen before include "Yield!" , "Be able to spare the money" , "Able to bear the cost of" , "Able to bear the expense" , "Provide; be able to pay for" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
