Crossword Genius

He counts beyond WW2 force (3,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

the allies

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'force' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both groups as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'he counts beyond ww2' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'he' could be 'heall' and 'heall' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ties' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for the allies that I've seen before include "fighting force" , "One side in war" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
