I believe the answer is:

pilaster

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'column' is the definition.
(I know that pilaster is a type of column)

'heavily cover entertaining newspaper' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'newspaper' could be 'i' (the i is a British newspaper) and 'i' is found in the answer.
'cover' could be 'plaster' (plastering is a kind of covering) and 'plaster' is present in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for pilaster that I've seen before include "Piles tar into a form of column" , "Rectangular column support projecting slightly from a wall" , "Decorative column standing out from the fa?ade of a building" , "Rectangular column projected from wall" , "Square column" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
