Crossword Genius

Herculean wife in seven-gated city dropping case (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hebe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'herculean wife' is the definition.
'hebe' can be an answer for 'wife' (I have seen 'Wife of Hercules ' mean 'hebe' so perhaps 'wife' could also mean 'hebe'). I'm not certain of the 'herculean' bit.

I cannot understand how the rest of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for hebe that I've seen before include "Greek goddess of spring" , "Cup-bearer of the gods and NZ plant" , "Zeus's daughter; shrub" , "Daughter of Zeus and Hera" , "Youth personified" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
