Crossword Genius

Hero of novel: edition, with twist, reversed opening (5,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

edwin drood

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hero of novel' is the definition.
'Edwin Drood' can be an answer for 'novel' (unfinished Charles Dickens novel). I'm not certain of the 'hero of' bit.

'edition with twist reversed opening' is the wordplay.
'edition' becomes 'ed'.
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'twist' becomes 'wind' (synonyms).
'reversed opening' becomes 'rood' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'ed'+'wind'+'rood'='EDWIN DROOD'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for edwin drood that I've seen before include "Dickensian character" , "Dickens's unfinished mystery tale" , "novel not finished" , "7 27 [CHARLES DICKENS] hero" , "man of mystery" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
