Crossword Genius

Hesitant, using gestural and verbal forms of communication (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wavering

'hesitant' is the definition.
(thesaurus)

'gestural and verbal forms of communication' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'and' could be 'n' (common abbreviation for 'and') and 'n' is located in the answer.
'communication' could be 'wave' (wave is a kind of communication) and 'wave' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'rig' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'using' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for wavering that I've seen before include "'Uncertain, hesitating (8)'" , "Faltering" , "Vacillating" , "Beginning to weaken" , "About to change mind" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
