Hiding place for a couple of sticks of wood! (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stash

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hiding place' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'couple of sticks of wood' is the wordplay.
'couple of sticks of' becomes 'st' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'wood' becomes 'ash' (wood from an ash tree).
'st'+'ash'='STASH'

'for a' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stash that I've seen before include "Secret store of valuables" , "Treasure trove" , "Stow away" , "(Hidden store of) drugs" , "(Illegal) hoard" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
