Hiding stuff back at new ship? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tanbark

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hiding stuff' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'back at new ship?' is the wordplay.
'back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'new' becomes 'n' (common abbreviation eg NT for New Testament).
'ship?' becomes 'bark' (I've seen this before).
'at' back-to-front is 'ta'.
'ta'+'n'+'bark'='TANBARK'

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
