High ground the tern has flown to from the flood (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

torrent

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'flood' is the definition.
(a torrent is a large amount of water)

'high ground the tern has flown to from' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'tern' is 'rent' which is located in the answer.
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is present in the answer.
A single letter 'r' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for torrent that I've seen before include "A rushing stream of water" , "Raging flood" , "Overwhelming flood" , "Host" , "Turbulent flow" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
