Hit London's West End, not forgetting Soho? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

clubland

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'west end not forgetting soho?' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this definition defines the answer.

'hit london's' is the wordplay.
'hit' becomes 'club' (clubbing is a kind of hitting).
'london's' becomes 'land' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'club'+'land'='CLUBLAND'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for clubland that I've seen before include "Social area of St James's" , "Area with lots of night spots" , "It tends to be busy on Saturday night" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
