Crossword Genius

Hit then escape from a pest (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

blowfly

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a pest' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'hit then escape' is the wordplay.
'hit' becomes 'blow' (blow can mean a hit).
'then' says to put letters next to each other.
'escape' becomes 'fly' (I've seen this in another clue).
'blow'+'fly'='BLOWFLY'

'from' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for blowfly that I've seen before include "insect" , "Bluebottle" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
