Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'crude sketches' is the wordplay.
'crude' becomes 'rough' (similar in meaning).
'sketches' becomes 's' (this could be a standard abbreviation I've not previously seen).
'rough'+'s'='ROUGHS'

'produce' acts as a link.
