Hostile element in poetry? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

averse

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'hostile' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'element in poetry?' is the wordplay.
'element in' becomes 'a' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'poetry?' becomes 'verse' (synonyms).
'a'+'verse'='AVERSE'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for averse that I've seen before include "Metal rod; card game" , "Ill-disposed to (a poem?)" , "A piece of poetry is reluctant" , "Disinclined - as ever (anag)" , "Not keen" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
