Crossword Genius

Hot stuff gadget picked up (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

loot

'hot stuff' is the definition.
(hot can mean looted or stolen)

'gadget picked up' is the wordplay.
'gadget' becomes 'tool'.
'picked up' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'tool' written backwards gives 'LOOT'.

(Other definitions for loot that I've seen before include "Pillage; money" , "rifle" , "familiar officer" , "Haul" , "Steal goods as spoils" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
