Hotel moved during generation of map for old city (8)
I believe the answer is:
carthage
'for old city' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'hotel moved during generation of map' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'hotel' could be 'h' (phonetic alphabet) and 'h' is located in the answer.
'generation' could be 'age' (as in age group) and 'age' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'cart' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for carthage that I've seen before include "Hannibal's home city" , "Dido was queen of this ancient city in N Africa" , "Phoenician city state near modern Tunis" , "Old African city" , "Ancient N. African city" .)
