Crossword Genius

Hovel, your first squat (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

dumpy

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'squat' is the definition.
(I know that squat can be written as dumpy)

'hovel your first' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'your first' could be 'y' (1st letter of 'your') and 'y' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'dump' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for dumpy that I've seen before include "Short and stout" , "Short and squat" , "mushroom" , "Short and thick" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
