Crossword Genius

How many, about, will be in the case (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

three

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'case' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both quantities as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'how many about will be in the' is the wordplay.
'how many about will be' becomes 're' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
're' inserted into 'the' is 'THREE'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for three that I've seen before include "Prime number" , "Start to count back, briefly" , "Amount in a trio" , "Figure" , "Number of strikes before you're out" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
