Crossword Genius

Huddersfield initially at bottom of division - how far down? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

depth

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'far down?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how they can define each other.

'huddersfield initially at bottom of division' is the wordplay.
'initially' says to take the initial letters.
'at' says to put letters next to each other (I've seen this in other clues).
'bottom of division' becomes 'dept' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
The first letter of 'huddersfield' is 'h'.
'h' put after 'dept' is 'DEPTH'.

'how' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for depth that I've seen before include "Profoundness" , "Distance from the surface to the bottom" , "sometimes leading to charge for sailors at war?" , "Distance from top down as in water" , "Military life; vulgarly artificial" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
