Ignorant reportedly get a peerage (9)
I believe the answer is:
benighted
'ignorant' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'get a peerage' is the wordplay.
'get' becomes 'be' ('get' can mean 'come to be').
'a peerage' becomes 'nighted' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'be'+'nighted'='BENIGHTED'
'reportedly' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. It may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for benighted that I've seen before include "Ignorant; caught in dark" , "Get behind (anag) - being ignorant" .)
