Ill-tempered woman one found in a sign (6)
I believe the answer is:
virago
'ill-tempered woman' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'one found in a sign' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'one' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found within the answer.
'a' is found in the answer.
'sign' could be 'v' (a V-sign a gesture made with two fingers) and 'v' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for virago that I've seen before include "Loudly fierce or abusive woman" , "Harridan" , "Strong and aggressive woman" , "Bad-tempered woman" , "Formidable female" .)
