I believe the answer is:

aping

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'imitation' is the definition.
(I know that imitation can be written as aping)

'brooch with silver coating' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'brooch' could be 'pin' (decorative item pinned to clothing) and 'pin' is located in the answer.
'silver' could be 'ag' (Ag is the chemical symbol for silver) and 'ag' is found in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for aping that I've seen before include "Imitation" , "Making copy of" , "Trying to repeat" , "Mimicking like monkey" , "Parroting" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
