Improving inn with change following refurbishment (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

enhancing

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'following refurbishment' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are present participle verbs, I don't understand how they can define each other.

'improving inn with change' is the wordplay.
'improving' is an anagram indicator (letters must be sorted out or rectified).
'with' says to put letters next to each other.
'inn'+'change'='innchange'
'innchange' with letters rearranged gives 'ENHANCING'.

(Other definitions for enhancing that I've seen before include "Intensifying" , "Adding something extra to make it better" , "Improving the value of (something)" , "Improving the quality (of something)" , "Making more attractive" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
