In communications code, the F word (7)

I believe the answer is:
foxtrot
'in communications code' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.
'the f word' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is present in the answer.
'f' is within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for foxtrot that I've seen before include "Ballroom dance in quadruple time" , "Lively ballroom dance" .)
