In error, give people their cards (7)
I believe the answer is:
misdeal
'in error' is the definition.
'misdeal' can be an answer for 'error' (thesaurus). I am not sure about the 'in' bit.
'give people their cards' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'give' could be 'deal' (dealing is a kind of giving) and 'deal' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'mis' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for misdeal that I've seen before include "Right hand that isn't" , "Wrongly issue" , "Give out cards incorrectly" , "Faulty issue of cards" , "Faulty distribution" .)
