In France, said to likewise (5)

I believe the answer is:
ditto
'likewise' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'in france said to' is the wordplay.
'in france' becomes 'di' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'said' becomes 't' (I've seen this in other clues).
'di'+'t'+'to'='DITTO'
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for ditto that I've seen before include "Two dots indicating the same again" , "that which has been said" , "Two small marks indicating the same again" , "Repeat the word above" , "Mark used to indicate the word above it should be repeated" .)
