In general, perhaps, it's where a taxi stands (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rank

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'in general' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives. Maybe you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'it's where a taxi stands' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'perhaps' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rank that I've seen before include "Coarse; tier" , "Foul - station" , "Where taxis wait - foul" , "Relative status" , "Foul and disgusting" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
