Crossword Genius

In hospital with curtain round after a bad fall (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

avalanche

'fall' is the definition.
(I know this)

'in hospital with curtain round after a bad' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'hospital' could be 'h' (abbreviation for hospital on maps) and 'h' is present in the answer.
'curtain' could be 'valance' (I've seen this before) and 'valance' is present in the remaining letters.
'a' is within the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for avalanche that I've seen before include "falling-out in the Highlands?" , "great fall" , "Sudden overwhelming quantity" , "Slide of a large amount of snow down a mountain" , "frightening fall" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
