Crossword Genius

In time, working brings rewards (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

honours

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'rewards' is the definition.
('honour' can be a synonym of 'reward')

'in time working' is the wordplay.
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'time' becomes 'hours' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'working' becomes 'on' (e.g. a machine is working or on).
'hours' placed around 'on' is 'HONOURS'.

'brings' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for honours that I've seen before include "Respects" , "Type of university degree" , "Jack's contribution to these" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sunday Times and The Times.
