In which a woman could give herself airs? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sari

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'in which a woman could give herself airs?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'in which a' is the wordplay.
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'which' becomes 'sri' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'sri' enclosing 'a' is 'SARI'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sari that I've seen before include "Indian robe" , "South Asian garment (variant spelling)" , "Something worn" , "Traditional Indian garment" , "Traditional dress of Hindu women" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
