accuse

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'indict' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'copper in the case wrongfully' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'copper' could be 'cu' (chemical symbol) and 'cu' is found within the answer.
an anagram of 'case' is 'acse' which is located in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for accuse that I've seen before include "Level a charge against" , "From what Zola wrote" , "Point the finger at" , "Charge with a crime" , "Apportion blame" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
