Crossword Genius

Insect found in Bordeaux, perhaps - it targets the legs (6,7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

french cricket

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'it targets the legs' is the definition.
The definition suggests a singular noun which matches the answer.

'insect found in bordeaux' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'insect' could be 'cricket' (cricket is a kind of insect) and 'cricket' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'french' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'perhaps' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for french cricket that I've seen is " Children's game with bat and tennis ball".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
