Crossword Genius

Interest Spooner expressed in career inducement (4,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

base rate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'interest' is the definition.
(I have seen 'official interest' mean 'base rate' so perhaps 'interest' could also mean 'base rate')

I don't understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for base rate that I've seen before include "Interest charged by the Bank of England to commercial banks" , "Bank of England lending index" , "Interest level set by the Bank of England" , "official interest" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
