Crossword Genius

Intimate garments thus put on a Swede, say (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

brassica

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'swede say' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how they can define each other.

'intimate garments thus put on a' is the wordplay.
'intimate garments' becomes 'bras' (I've seen this before).
'thus' becomes 'sic' ('thus' in Latin).
'put on' says to put letters next to each other.
'bras'+'sic'+'a'='BRASSICA'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for brassica that I've seen before include "Cabbage, say" , "Plant of cabbage genus" , "Cabbages, cauliflowers etc" , "Plant genus including many vegetables" , "Cabbages, broccoli etc." .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
