Crossword Genius

Inventor of the telephone - or part of it (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bell

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'inventor of the telephone' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'part of it' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'part' could be 'ell' (ell is a kind of part) and 'ell' is present in the answer.
A single letter 'b' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'or' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bell that I've seen before include "batsman Ian" , "He invented" , "kind of curve" , "Chime" , "Telephone call?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
