Crossword Genius

Irish and Polish turning to Mexican food (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

burrito

'mexican food' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'irish and polish turning to' is the wordplay.
'irish' becomes 'ir' (abbreviation).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'polish' becomes 'rub' (polish meaning rub to make shiny).
'turning' says the letters should be written backwards.
'ir'+'rub'='irrub'
'irrub' written backwards gives 'burri'.
'burri'+'to'='BURRITO'

(Other definitions for burrito that I've seen before include "Tortilla folded around a savoury filling" , "Mexican dish of tortilla folded around a filling" , "that's eaten in Mexico" , "dish from Mexico" , "Mexican food" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
