Crossword Genius

Ironwork by artist, something seen above the head (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

fedora

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'ironwork' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'artist something seen above the head' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'artist' could be 'ra' (Royal Academician, member of Royal Academy of Arts) and 'ra' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

'by' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for fedora that I've seen before include "Soft felt hat with a curled brim" , "Style of hat" , "Or fade away with man's soft felt hat" , "Felt hat dented lengthways" , "Headgear" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
