'irreverent' is the definition.
(similar in meaning)

'academic one from scotland' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'academic' could be 'prof' (short for professor) and 'prof' is found within the answer.
'one' could be 'ane' (synonyms) and 'ane' is located in the answer.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for profane that I've seen before include "Impious" , "Blasphemous, irreligious" , "Sacrilegious or blasphemous" , "Irreverent - pagan" , "Secular; blasphemous" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
