Crossword Genius

Irritable, having no spirit with Raymond around (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ratty

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'irritable' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'spirit with raymond around' is the wordplay.
'spirit with' becomes 'tt' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'raymond' becomes 'ray' (I've seen this in other clues).
'around' is an insertion indicator.
'tt' placed within 'ray' is 'RATTY'.

'having no' acts as a link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ratty that I've seen before include "Mole's friend (The Wind in the Willows)" , "his friend being a dangerous driver" , "Bad tempered" , "Waspish" , "water vole, literally" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
