Crossword Genius

Is able to travel back after cold drink (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cognac

'drink' is the definition.
(Cognac is an example)

'is able to travel back after cold' is the wordplay.
'is able to' becomes 'can' (I've seen this before).
'travel' becomes 'go' ('go' can be a synonym of 'travel').
'back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'after' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'cold' becomes 'c' (eg on taps).
'can'+'go'='cango'
'cango' back-to-front is 'ognac'.
'ognac' after 'c' is 'COGNAC'.

(Other definitions for cognac that I've seen before include "strong drink" , "Brandy of the French Charente" , "High-quality brandy" , "French town - French brandy" , "(French district famed for) fine brandy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
