'island' is the definition.
(Scottish island)

'nation adopting incredibly wise candidate for high office' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
an anagram of 'wise' is 'ewis' which is located in the answer.
'nation' could be 'land' (synonyms) and 'land' is found in the leftover letters.
'high' could be 'h' (abbreviation) and 'h' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'arris' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
