Crossword Genius

Isn't that just like the fellow! (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

donnish

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'fellow' is the definition.
Both the definition and answer are adjectives. Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'isn't that just like' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'like' could be 'ish' (similar in meaning) and 'ish' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for donnish that I've seen before include "Lecturer probably is" , "Resembling academic" , "Typical of lecturer" , "Scholarly" , "Like fellow, perhaps" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
