Crossword Genius

It follows attempt to support US medical programme (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ergo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'it follows' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'attempt to support us medical programme' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'attempt' could be 'go' (go is a kind of attempt) and 'go' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'er' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ergo that I've seen before include "Hence" , "Thus" , "for this reason" , "It follows" , "so philosopher wrote in Latin" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
