Crossword Genius

It is inclined to lie low when troubles intervene (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

hillside

'it is inclined' is the definition.
(geographical feature with an incline)

'lie low when troubles intervene' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'when' could be 'e' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'e' is found within the answer.
'troubles' could be 'ills' ('ill' can be a synonym of 'trouble') and 'ills' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'hid' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'to' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for hillside that I've seen before include "One's inclined" , "Brae in Scotland" , "Bank" , "Incline" , "Where Arnold's Scholar travelled" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Globe and Mail.
