Items on French loaves about to fill Yankees? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

berets

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'yankees?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are plural nouns, I cannot see how one could define the other.

'items on french loaves about to fill' is the wordplay.
'items on french loaves' becomes 'bets' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'about' becomes 're' ('re' means regarding or about).
'to fill' is an insertion indicator.
'bets' placed around 're' is 'BERETS'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for berets that I've seen before include "headgear" , "Round flattish caps" , "Round flat caps" , "capital investments" , "Soft flat caps" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
