Crossword Genius

It's lying bound up outside church (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

deceit

'it's lying' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'bound up outside church' is the wordplay.
'bound' becomes 'tied' ('tie' can be a synonym of 'bind').
'up' is a reversal indicator (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'outside' is an insertion indicator (some letters go outside others).
'church' becomes 'ce' (abbreviation for Church of England).
'tied' back-to-front is 'deit'.
'deit' going around 'ce' is 'DECEIT'.

(Other definitions for deceit that I've seen before include "Dishonesty, misrepresentation" , "Fraud, cheating" , "Hypocrisy" , "Falsehood" , "Deliberate misrepresentation" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
