Jack's lofty situation, at work? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

steeple

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'work?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'jack's lofty situation' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'lofty' could be 'steep' (I've seen this before) and 'steep' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'at' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for steeple that I've seen before include "Tall tower with spire on top of church" , "Sort of chase" , "Pointed structure" , "point" , "Pet eels (anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
