Crossword Genius

James undressed, got into bed and smiled (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

beamed

'smiled' is the definition.
(beaming is a kind of smiling)

'james undressed got into bed' is the wordplay.
'undressed' says to take the centre (the word removes the letters which clothe it).
'got into' is an insertion indicator.
The centre of 'james' is 'ame'.
'ame' going inside 'bed' is 'BEAMED'.

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for beamed that I've seen before include "Smiled widely - having support" , "Smiled brightly like sun ray" , "Smiled broadly like sun ray" , "Shone brightly or smiled widely" , "Smiled broadly and warmly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
