Crossword Genius

Journalist given position in the French city (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

leeds

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the french city' is the definition.
'leeds' can be an answer for 'city' (Leeds is an example). I'm unsure of the 'the french' bit.

'journalist given position in' is the wordplay.
'journalist' becomes 'ed' (short for editor).
'given position' becomes 'les' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'ed' placed into 'les' is 'LEEDS'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for leeds that I've seen before include "Championship team" , "Northern town" , "English city" , "W Yorkshire city" , "Soccer team" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
