Crossword Genius

Journalist over the pond taken advantage of (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

used

'taken advantage of' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'journalist over the pond' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'journalist' could be 'ed' (short for editor) and 'ed' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'us' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for used that I've seen before include "Dog-eared" , "Old" , "Availed oneself of" , "Brought into play" , "not got directly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
